Group Walk: Glenfield Tunnel, Over the Top
On Tuesday 15 September, 2pm
Up to 2 hours, medium pace
Meeting location will be confirmed on booking.
We are running this walk on two different dates to allow opportunities to more people. Please attend on the date you have booked for – places will not be interchangeable between the walks due to the need to limit participant numbers. Thank you.
Booking opens Saturday 29 August at 9am.
Participant places: 5.
Tucked away on West Leicester’s modern residential roads is evidence of Leicester’s first steam railway. Join us as we take a circuitous route through Glenfield, tracing some of the surface-level ventilation shafts which mark the line of the historic Glenfield Tunnel, then take a footpath to the tunnel entrance (now closed **). Our walk leader will talk briefly about the Leicester to Swannington Railway, from its beginnings to its closure, and about the Glenfield Tunnel. This walk is repeated on Saturday 19 September – which needs to be booked separately.
**The Glenfield Tunnel itself will not be open for this walk.
Our groups are smaller than before so booking is essential – see ‘how to book’ below. Please do not turn up at walks if you have not booked – we regret you will be turned away.
Weather
Remember to bring a bottle of water and to dress appropriately for the weather.
Group size
Groups will be smaller than before – a maximum of 5 participants with one walk leader. This complies with current government guidance that no more than 6 people from different households can meet outdoors in a public space, and helps keep groups manageable. To allow opportunities to others, a maximum of 2 people from the same household/ support bubble may attend. We are sorry that we cannot accommodate more people at this time. Please follow instructions for booking places and also observe the guidance below with regards to Covid-19.
Covid-19 and group walks
- Please do not attend a walk if you or someone in your household/support bubble has symptoms of Covid-19. Instead, please stay home and self-isolate. See the latest information on the NHS website about self-isolating and obtaining a test.
- If you develop symptoms within 14 days of attending a group walk, please let us know so that we can contact others.
- During walks, we kindly ask walkers to maintain the 2m social distancing from each other and members of the public (or at least 1m if you are wearing a face mask).
- Take hygiene precautions when you are outside (you may wish to carry your own hand sanitizer) and wash your hands as soon as you are back indoors.
Self-guided routes
If you have been unable to book onto one of our group walks, or you prefer to explore with your family or friends, self-guided routes are available to download from our routes page or via the Go Jauntly smartphone app. Enjoy exploring Leicester this summer.
How to book
Booking opens Saturday 29 August at 9am. Booking is essential.
Click ‘Book your space’ below to go to our Eventbrite page and register for this walk, or phone 0116 373 7859 when booking has opened (places will not be available before). Our phone line is answered during office hours (Monday to Friday, 9am-5.30pm), not at weekends.

New Walkers
Once you have booked a place, if you have not walked with Leicester City Council before we will ask you to complete a Walker Registration form before you attend the walk. You will only need to complete the registration form once and can attend any of our walks thereafter (subject to booking a place). We can send you a link to complete the registration form online or you can speak to our staff to complete it over the phone in advance of the walk.
Cancellations
If you are no longer able to attend, please cancel your place via Eventbrite or contact us by phone (during office hours) to cancel your place so we can allow others the opportunity to attend. This is especially important while our group sizes are small. Thank you in advance.
